Confirmation Bias Closes Career Doors

Options are power in The Me-Suite

Confirmation bias closes career doors too soon. Options are power. It goes like this...

Confirmation Bias: The role at Company A is Senior Director level. I need VP.
Me: Maybe. What else would you need to know about Company A and the role to determine the appropriate level/title for you at that company?

Confirmation Bias: The new role at my company is a lateral move which isn't good for me.
Me: Maybe. What else do you want to know about the new role and the company's succession planning to decide on the internal move?

Confirmation Bias: I know someone who worked there and didn't like it.
Me: That's a data point. What do you need to see from Company B to know if this role is good for YOU?

Confirmation Bias: I don't think I'll have enough autonomy in that position.
Me: How can you lean in to get the offer, and then ask questions that will help you determine that?

Confirmation Bias: That industry is hiring but it doesn't excite me.
Me: How up-to-date are you on that industry? What trends/innovations in that space do excite you?

Watch out for confirmation bias that may be limiting your options from the start.
